Shillong
is the capital of Meghalaya, one of the smallest states
in India. It is also the headquarters of the East
Khasi Hills district and is situated at an average
altitude of 4,908 feet (1,496 m) above sea level,
with the highest point being Lum Shyllong at 6,447
feet (1,965 m). The city had a population of 260,520
according to the 2001 census. It is said that the
rolling hills around the town reminded the European
settlers of Scotland. Hence, Shillong is also known
as Scotland of the East.
The place, the people and the climate all combined
together to create an amiable atmosphere, to make
Shillong Meghalaya an ideal holiday destination throughout
the year. Cherrapunjee, the wettest place on earth
is only 56 kms away from Shillong. Shillong has beautiful
lakes and waterfalls, and is set in pine forests and
green mountains. It is a popular hill-station which
the British used to call the Scotland of the East.
